[sticky post] FIC Archive Post

We all know I'm not known for my speed as a writer, but I thought having one post with links to all my stories would make things easier for new readers.

If you click the link for the story, you'll find the warnings and spoilers listed if there are any.

Thanks for stopping by!

What should nightrider101 be reading?

Got a story you think I read should and, more importantly, you think I should rec? Please leave me a link here and I'll check it out. I think, by now, everyone knows my insatiable desire to read good fics. If you stumble across something you think I'll like, please let me know about it. Also, if you have any suggestions on how I can improve my rec-a-Sunday project, please let me know.

Comments Change

Just a quick FYI - I've changed my journal settings to allow comments from registered users only. I've been under a spam attack lately and deleting 20+ spam messages daily is not how I want to spend my time on LJ. I don't plan on keeping it this way forever. I'm sure the anonymous spammers will find someone else to offer their online pharmaceuticals to.

I hope everyone is doing well!
And Enoch Still Walks With God (Highlander: The Series | Gen | Teen | 2,139)
Author: lannamichaels
Summary: You do not know how old you are and do not care.
Reasons for Reccing: This is a poignant, descriptive look at Methos and what it's like to be as old as he is and to have seen and done the things he has. It has a painfully honest edge to it without becoming devastating. Even though it's very short, it packs a wallop. Also, I'm a sucker for a well written second person fic. They can be so much fun and refreshing to read. If you have a soft spot, or at least some nostalgia for the world's oldest immortal, go and read this. Show a little love to an old fandom. :)

Rec: Dying to Return [Merlin BBC]

Dying to Return (Merlin BBC | Merlin/Arthur, past Gwen/Arthur | Teen | 19,869)
Author: StormDancer
Summary: When they try to hang him, he floats. They put him on the pyre at dawn. He doesn’t burn.
Reasons for Reccing: After watching Merlin struggle for five years and usually not get it right, it's lovely to read a story that takes place in the future where they've all grown and when Merlin returns, he's wise. Not perfect, mind you, but definitely wiser. I also liked how the author handled Gwen. It felt mature and realistic. Sometimes relationships don't work out and that's life. It doesn't necessarily mean that one person is wrong and the other is right. Also, after reading I have a new favorite character: Gwaine's cloak. Long may it reign!
Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit (Star Trek AOS | Gen | Teen | 15,113)
Author: lazulisong
Summary: It really does take a village to raise a Jim.
Reasons for Reccing: It's refreshing to read a story where Jim is not solely defined by all the bad things that's happened during his short, turbulent life. Yes, those events shaped him, but that's all there is. This author creates an original character who is wise, intelligent and so completely Vulcan that I think I loved him more than anyone else. Normally I don't read stories where an OC is a prominent character, but in this work, the OC makes the story rather than detracting from it. Also, it contains the funniest funeral scene I have ever read... and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Rec: The Good Place [Sherlock BBC]

The Good Place (Sherlock BBC | Sherlock Holmes/Greg Lestrade | Teen | 10,443)
Author: impishtubist
Summary: It’s not easy, this resurrection business.
Reasons for Reccing: It's no secret that I ship John/Sherlock. I also have a very soft spot in my heart for Lestrade. This story is a realistic look at what happens when you lose someone. Unfortunately, despite how much you would like to curl up into a ball and never move again, life goes on and you find a way to deal with it or at least limp through it. This story strikes a good balance between the horrible battle that Sherlock was forced to fight on his own and grief felt by those he left behind. This author's style is intelligent and eloquent, and even if it's not your pairing of choice, I highly recommend giving it a shot. Even with the new season of Sherlock having aired, this story still works beautifully.

Rec: Terms of Service [Sherlock BBC]

Terms of Service (Sherlock BBC | Sherlock Holmes/John Watson | Explicit | 51,502)
Author: kres
Summary: John finds out from the telly.
Reasons for Reccing: This story is messy, complicated and completely twisted in parts. It's raw and achingly painful, and written in a way that I could definitely see it if John wasn't as supposedly well adjusted as we see him on the show. I felt like I was watching in a movie in my head rather than reading words on a screen. Be sure to read the warnings carefully. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, and the author makes no bones about that. Although it was emotional and sometimes I felt like walking on broken glass, it was also hopeful, intelligent, and amazingly well written. If you're up for something different, take a stroll on the wild side and read this story.

Rec: Fighting Gravity [Star Trek AOS]

Fighting Gravity (Star Trek AOS | Kirk/Spock | Teen | 137,824)
Author: pantswarrior
Summary: When Spock left Starfleet after the encounter with Nero, Jim thought he'd lost his chance at their supposedly destined friendship. Upon returning to Earth after the Enterprise's first five-year mission, he discovers that Spock lost far more. Jim's willing to fight for the bright future they were promised, but the one thing standing in its way is Spock himself.
Reasons for Reccing: I've seen this story recced all over the fandom, and it took aschicca giving it her seal of approval before I finally gave it a read. As it turns out, everyone was right. It's absolutely fantastic. It's a different spin on others in the fandom because Spock doesn't end up as Kirk's first officer aboard the Enterprise and Kirk actually manages okay without him. That doesn't mean Kirk doesn't want him there. :) Kirk and Spock are both emotionally vulnerable in this, but for very different reasons, and all the thought the author put into this plot-driven story shows. Set aside some time to read this one. You've got a full novel on your hands.
In love, in faith unbroken dwell (Sherlock | Gen | All Ages | 2,631)
Author: coloredink
Summary: There are so many things about Sherlock that he didn't know. So many things that he might never have known, if they hadn't started meeting like this.
Reasons for Reccing: This is one of those stories that I would appreciate even if I wasn't involved in the Sherlock fandom. It's subtle, poetic and gorgeous. It's nice to see people celebrating Sherlock's life rather than focusing on the things he wasn't or the things they didn't believe he'd done. There are so many fics written post Reichenbach that are gut-wrenching, and while those have a place (I do love a good angst fest), this story managed to hit the spot.
