Reasons for Reccing: Oh, to be young again! This story explores that and more. It features a great supporting cast and a heartfelt plot. I have a great deal of respect for this author because, without giving to much away, there's a scene I don't think I would have had the guts to write, but I'm so glad the author did. It's edgy and smokin' hot. That's all I'm going to say about that. High school fics normally aren't my thing, but this story is much more than that. It's about growing up and living with the possibility of regret. We'll call it a high school fic with an old soul.

Reasons for Reccing: First thing: that summary? Freaking epic. This story remains one of the most creative Supernatural stories I've found. The original characters are engaging and I found myself caring about more than just the main characters. One of the most impressive things about this story is the scale. It's truly grand and otherworldly, and even with that, the characters remain so breathtakingly human. This story was written in 2010, and I've probably read it three times by now. It's also available on AO3 so check there if you would like to download it for easier reading.

The Worst You Can Do Is Harm (Avengers | Steve Rogers/Tony Stark | Teen | 9,990)

Summary: So what if Tony Stark has a folder of pictures JARVIS recognizes alternately as Project Rebirth (when Tony's sober), Project Hero Worship (when he's tipsy), and Project Spank Bank (when he's drunk)? No big deal. Unless Loki destroys Avengers Mansion and Hawkeye ends up finding the damn pictures and showing them to Steve. And if there's maybe a teeny-tiny misunderstanding about why precisely Tony has them. In which Loki is a dick, Thor is the bestest drinking buddy ever, and Tony has a hard time saying what he means.
Reasons for Reccing: I love the idea that Tony keeps a folder filled with pictures of Steve. It seems like something he would do, and the way the author describes the fallout from this is written beautifully. The ending is something of perfection; it's not overdone, using the angst as an excuse for sex later on... not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) If you're in the mood for a good 'Tony feels' story, this is the one for you.

Orizuru (Supernatural RPF | Jensen/Misha | Explicit | 46,425)

The origami birds scattered in his path are no exception - each accompanying message more obscure and more pointed than the last. As he slowly becomes the proud owner of a growing paper menagerie, Jensen has to decide whether to follow the clues or follow his heart.
Reasons for Reccing: Like onions, this story has layers. The author takes the time to explore the characters, to peel away each layer to reveal something new. Something that makes this story different is that the narrator is sometimes unreliable, so the facts are skewed and biased, a flaw of the human condition. I don't read a lot of this pairing, but this one was recced to me and I'm so glad I took a chance and read it.

Chicago's Most Wanted (Due South | Fraser/Ray K | R | 252k)

Summary: "Of course he got the money--he's Fraser, he's organized, he's a fucking criminal mastermind, what do you think?!"
Reasons for Reccing: Does anyone remember Due South? It remains the absolute best buddy show of all time so if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend watching it. This story could have been one of the better episodes of the show, only with slightly more slash and smutty intentions. I've always loved amnesia fic along with angst and well written humor. This story delivers on all accounts and to this day is considered a fandom favorite. If you have no idea what the heck Due South is, watch it then go read this story.

Res Gestae (Supernatural | Sam/Dean & Sam/OFC | Explicit | 51,201)

Summary: When Dean disappears on a hunt, the last thing Sam expects is the help of another psychic in trying to find him. The search doesn't go well, and when Dean walks back into his life, it's with news that tears the world out from under them both.
Reasons for Reccing: This story is so incredibly messy, much like Sam and Dean. A case could be made that it's mpreg, although I don't see where the author warned for that. In the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to throw that out there. As someone who does not like mpreg, I read this story and enjoyed it. Maybe genderswap that doesn't stick is a better way to word it. I have no idea - the story is complicated, and I don't want to warn anyone anyway. In the end, a heartbreaking angst-fest that remains true to the characters. There's a glimmer of hope that canon sometimes doesn't give us, but Sam and Dean definitely have to work for it first.

With The River As My Guide (Star Trek | Kirk/Spock | Mature | 35,593)

Summary: On shore leave on Earth, Captain Kirk and Commander Spock disappear during a backpacking trip in the mountains. A month later, Commander Spock is found unconscious and alone in the desert. Despite Starfleet’s hopes that he will lead them to the still missing Captain Kirk, Spock is unable to recall who took them, why they were taken, and why only he was released. Worst of all perhaps, he cannot tell them the location of Captain Kirk, or even if he still lives...
Reasons for Reccing: I'm not sure why there's not at least one hundred comments on this story because it's absolutely amazing. This story is very fast paced, the mystery constantly sweeping the plot along, and managed to keep me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The plot is grounded in the human relationships, the connections between friends and would-be lovers. There's a certain amount of moral ambiguity woven throughout that I appreciate. Characters shouldn't be perfect - even the heroes. If you're in the mood for something intense with a great mystery and solid romance, definitely give this story a shot.

TKO (Supernatural RPF | Jensen/Jared | R | 47,000)

Summary: Jensen is an ex-con with a clean slate. Jared owns an MMA gym. They like each other, a lot.
Reasons for Reccing: I love stories that delve into personal boundaries and play with control themes without going overboard to the point where I'm offended on behalf of one of the characters. This story deals with finding your confidence, yourself, when it seems like you've lost everything. The author doesn't sugarcoat the ending, and there's no magical 'fix-it' which I appreciate. Everyone still has room for improvement. Be sure to heed the warnings because there are D/s undertones, although it's by no means purely porn or the entirety of the plot. This is another fic that I read ages ago and has stuck with me.
