FIC: The Value of a Life Part 1

FIC: The Value of a Life
Author: NightRider
Fandom: Doctor Who
Beta: The utterly amazing starxd_sparrow
Rating: R
Disclaimer I own nothing related to Doctor Who. How sad for me!
Characters: Jack/Rose, the Ninth Doctor
Summary: Rose is injured, and Jack feels responsible.
A/N: Written for karaokegal for the Jack/Rose Ficathon

“What the hell did you think you were doing?” Jack asked, his voice thick with frustration and concern as he guided her onto the bed. He’d been to the medical unit several times since joining the TARDIS crew, but he’d always been the patient. If he’d had his way this time, that wouldn’t have changed.

He was thrilled when the Doctor decided to show him how to operate some of the TARDIS’ complex medical equipment. It hadn’t taken the Doctor long to work out Jack’s ability to find trouble and his proclivity for getting injured on a regular basis. Never in a million years did Jack suspect he’d be using his newfound knowledge on Rose.

“I was tryin’ to help,” Rose mumbled. “Did you expect me to stand there and do nothing?” He resisted the urge to tell her, yes, that’s exactly what he expected her to do because she was too precious to lose. He didn’t say it, though. He knew she wouldn’t have been impressed.

She winced as he applied antiseptic to her arm. He was trying to be gentle, and she was trying to hide her pain. Neither were having much success.

“Come on,” he encouraged, “We need to get your shirt off.” Rose’s eyes widened before her gaze dropped to the tattered pink shirt that was covered in dirt and splattered with blood.

She took a deep breath and nodded. Calloused fingers trailed slowly over her sides and wrapped around the ripped cloth. She lifted her arms as Jack gently eased her shirt over her head. Her head dropped, and she studied the small scratches on her hands. Jack mentally kicked himself. Of course she would want the Doctor to be the one attending to her. Why in the world would she would a conman anywhere near her, especially when she was vulnerable?

“If I thought we could wait for the Doctor to get back, I would, but your injuries – “

“’S alright,” she reassured immediately. “I trust you.”

“I’m not sure why,” Jack responded. It was supposed to be a joke, but Rose grabbed his hand before he could turn away.

“Don’t talk like that,” she admonished. “You know I trust you.” When he didn’t respond she added, “You do know that, don’t you?”

“Yeah, of course I do.” Without thinking, he brushed his lips over her knuckles. “Now this might hurt a bit.”

“I kinda figured that.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

6 Hours Before

The Doctor had been rambling about some spare parts he needed to pick up which had lead them to the marketplace on Ballipotanium. The Doctor’s services had been requested by an area scientist once his knowledge of the planet’s geology became known. There had been unusual seismic activity on the planet causing strange rock formation to pop up. Before leaving them, the Doctor caught Jack’s gaze and he shifted his blue eyes to Rose. Jack inclined his head in acknowledgment. It should have gone without saying that Jack would look out for Rose, but the Doctor liked to be thorough.

Rose smiled at the Doctor and waved before latching onto Jack’s hand and hauling him towards one of the street vendors that caught her interest. He found himself marveling at her enthusiasm. Sure, he enjoyed life as much as the next person, but most of the time his care-free attitude was part of the persona he projected. With Rose, it was always genuine and definitely something he could get used to.

Rose mentioned something about wanting to purchase a bottle of perfume, but soon Jack was engrossed in conversation with a three-headed alien about nano-termites.

“Jack!”

He heard her voice, and his eyes tried to find her familiar face in the throngs of people. When she didn’t respond, he thanked the vendor for his assistance and stepped away from the booth.

He saw a flash of blonde hair, a recognizable figure in the distance running, diving, and disappearing.

“Rose!”

He had barely started to run when an explosion ripped through the street.

He found her minutes later in the middle of the chaos. She was standing in the middle of the street amongst piles of rubble with a distant smile on her face, and it was obvious she’d been injured. Black soot clung to her clothes, and blood trickled down her arm.

“Are you okay?” he asked, reaching for her arm.

“Oh, ‘ello Jack,” she returned. “’M fine.”

“You’re hurt,” Jack said gently as he tried to catalogue all her injuries without being obvious. She was able to stand and talk which were both good signs. “We need to find the Doctor.”

“The TARDIS,” she responded. “It’s the first place he’ll look.”

“Are you sure you’re okay to walk?” Jack asked. When she nodded, he took her hand.

As he led her through the throngs of people, he was trying to figure out exactly what had happened at the marketplace. For the life of him, he couldn’t think of one good reason why Rose had run towards the area where the explosion had occurred – rather than away.

He was also trying to think of a way to explain to the Doctor why he’d allowed his precious Rose to be hurt.

I loved that interaction between Rose and Jack in the med unit! You've captured both characters wonderfully.

Looking forward to finding out what happened, and seeing the Doc's reaction! :-)

P.S. I thought Nine had blue eyes? ::scratches head::

Thank you! To be honest, I struggled with this story. I'm still not happy with it, but at this point, I'm just happy to have something posted since I was so horribly late.

P.S. I thought Nine had blue eyes?

Nine does have blue eyes. I was actually referring to Jack, but when I reread the sentence I realized it didn't make any sense the way I worded it. Thanks for pointing that out. It's corrected now. :)

He was also trying to think of a way to explain to the Doctor why he’d allowed his precious Rose to be hurt.

Uh oh... that will be tough. Poor Jack, I'm not envying him. And it's so like him to feel responsible for everything that goes wrong!

I rally liked Jack's and Rose's voices, absolutely realistic. I could hear Billie Piper's voice in my head reading Rose's lines :)

Good to see you got around to write this one! *sits and waits for next part*

Good to see you got around to write this one!

Unfortunately I'm posting about a week past the deadline. I'm still not completely happy with the story because I know it's not my best, but eh, they all can't be winners, right?

Thanks for the kind review. It's always lovely to hear your thoughts!

Ooh, lovely to see yours appearing at last! Too short, though. ;)

Jack's care and concern for Rose is lovely, and of course he thinks she'd prefer to have the Doctor with her, silly boy ;) But she'll make sure he knows he's just as important, right? More soon!

Thanks Wendy! I felt horrible about posting so late. I struggled with this story. I don't feel like it's my best work, but I appreciate you taking the time to respond. It always a pleasure to hear from an author that I respect greatly.

Finally got the bunny to cooperate then, did you? :) I'm quite glad. Love the interaction in the beginning. Very them. I hope the other parts come easier for you.

No, it didn't cooperate. The guilt got to me because I'm so horribly late posting. lol Hopefully the rest will come easier, but this isn't my favorite story. I hope the person that it's written for likes it, though.

Thanks for the vote of confidence!

So... why did she run towards the explosion?

This is intriguing. I look forward to the next chapter. *bounces*

Only you could make me read Jack/Rose!
The med unit scene was lovely. But the Doctor is going to be pissed, I fear...
And I bet Jack was, in fact, flirting with that three headed alien. Because it's Jack.

By the way, I'm right now struggling through another page of my challenge fic. It's the second. This isn't going well, I'll probably write something violent and mindless right after just because I, for once, need to write something that flows smoothly.
But Jack's already married.

Wow! I didn't expect you to read this! :D What a nice surprise! Between you and me, you know how much I struggled with this story. I'm still not happy with it, but I was already past the deadline for the ficathon.

Oh, your challenge story! Is it bad that something violent flows so easily for you? :) You'll always be my Queen of Angst!

Ugh...my sweet Jack is married - and I know it's not the to the Doctor. Good thing I wasn't at that ceremony because I would have had some serious objections!

Eventually I'm going to try to get back to this story. :)
