Drabble: Silly Games

Drabble: Silly Games
Author: NightRider
Fandom: The OC
Characters: Ryan, Sandy
Rating: G
Summary: It was just a silly play station game.
A/N: I got inspired tonight while rewatching Season 1 for my AU fic.

It was just a silly play station game.

Ryan grinned as Sandy beheaded a particularly grotesque looking warrior.

“Not bad for an old man,” Sandy stated, bumping Ryan’s shoulder.

“Stick with me,” Ryan replied. “We might just make it out alive.”

Sandy continued to smile as his fingers randomly pressed buttons on the plastic controller. He had no idea what he was doing, but that didn’t matter.

“Hey, we made it out of the forest,” Sandy commented as his character raised his sword in victory.

Ryan glanced at him out of the corner of his eye. “Another game?”

“Can I be a ninja this time?”

“You can be whatever you want,” Ryan replied as he placed different disc in the console. Ryan resettled on the couch, his shoulder barely touching Sandy’s.

It was just a silly play station game that reminded a teenager that despite all he’d been through, he still mattered and even though it was just a game, Sandy would save the world with him anytime.

*snickers* I should probably listen to my own writing too! I've been known to write the parental units as blabbering idiots. ;)

Aww! Thank you! Your feedback has made my day especially since I'm suffering from an attack of 'everything I write is complete crap'. It comes and goes. ;)

LOL Yeah, the cliffhanger of DOOM! Sorry about that... I definitely haven't forgotten about it. :) Hopefully the muses will cooperate soon. Thanks for asking!

I loved the video game scene in "The Debut." Like the breakfast scenes and certain Sandy/Ryan time early on, I really hoped that it would be a tradition. I would have loved to have watched these two bond with the occasional game, and have it serve as a launching pad of sorts where they were in a relative comfort zone to semi-focus on the game and also just spend time together. It makes me wistfully long for what could have been, and for all that Ryan could have been spared had Sandy spent the occasional casual moment with him under the guise of relaxing, but really to connect. It's the simple things that, when done consistently, build bridges. Even minimal interaction was what was missing after a few months- and then it disappeared.

That's what makes this all the more precious. Everything is possible, and Ryan even gets to pretend, however briefly, that he has a reprieve from the constant whirlpool of demands and uncertainties that constantly threaten to pull him under- as well as the demands of all the people who seem to expect so much and put their own burdens on his weary shoulders. This glimpse is a gasp of carefree air and it's also shared with the one person Ryan is most comfortable with and who has the closest thing to a realistic image of him- as opposed to all the other self-serving portraits or stereotypical misjudgements of the others.

I like the teasing sort of contact. There's nothing forced or too awkward, but still a respect of certain boundaries along with a pushing of them as well. Ryan still can't come out and ask for more or let on that he's hungry for that sort of bond, but he'll gradually allow and accept more and not resist or draw attention to it to see how long it lasts.

How ironic, but appropriate, for Ryan, of all people, to tell Sandy that he can be whoever he wants. Ryan is the one who will be "whoever you want me to be" across the boards, but he's beyond generous when it comes to anyone else- especially Sandy. You've also done a wonderful job of including how Ryan feels about Sandy as his mentor, idol and savior. He truly is in awe of him and is able to acknowledge that if someone like Sandy chooses to spend a free minute with him when he could do any number of things, and enjoys himself, then just maybe Ryan has some value after all. If Sandy recognizes it, there has to be something to it.

So what if my comment was way longer than your drabble? It was inspiring- and oh did it make me wish for more from certain less skilled writers with the attention spans of newts. (My apologies to all newts.)

Thanks!

I actually thought about you while I was writing this. :) I know you're a sucker for Season 1 Ryan and to see some of those earlier relationships explored. I rewatched The Debut last night and nearly melted underneath my chair during that scene. Oh, the possibilities! Of course it also makes me slightly bitter because we all know the early promise didn't lead to much satisfaction later in the series.

I like the teasing sort of contact. There's nothing forced or too awkward, but still a respect of certain boundaries along with a pushing of them as well.

I'm so glad you pointed that out! Giving Ryan the physical contact he desperately needs and deserves while making it seem believable is a difficult thing to accomplish. I was going for a touching moment without beating anyone over the head with it. ;) As much as I'd love for Sandy to wrap him in a bone-crushing hug, I just don't see that happening especially during the vulnerable beginning of their relationship.

Your comments are always longer than my drabbles! And yes, I love and appreciate every second of it. With a faithful reader like you around, how can I not write?

Awww. I always admire it when a writer is able to put so much into something so short. There is so much more to this than a silly game. Kudos!
