Seriously, LJ?

I, like many others on my flist, am seriously disturbed by LJ's bright idea to link to Facebook and Twitter. There's a reason I don't share my fandom related giddiness (see also: gay porn) on my FB account.

I'm asking everyone who reads my stories and comments on my journal not to link anything to any social networking site. I'm seriously considering friends locking all my posts to ensure some level of privacy.

Major LJ fail right now.

"You're probably all aware that Livejournal now allows you to repost comments to Facebook and Twitter. This is a very unpopular new feature. Firefox has an addon that hides the new Facebook / Twitter repost ticky boxes. But here's a little line of code you can use to make it so that no one, no matter what browser they're using, can repost comments.

.b-repost-item {display:none}

Here's what to do:

1. Go to Custom CSS in Customize Journal Style.

2. Copy and paste .b-repost-item {display:none} into the Custom stylesheet box and save changes.

Voila! As you can see the boxes are hidden on the comm now :) (daphnie added note: the text will still be there but the ticky boxes are gone! Basically rendering the ability nul and void)

FYI I did not write this but it was doing the rounds on my f-list and I encourage you to share it."

Oh holy shit - seriously?? I admit as of late my RL has made me more of a stalker on LJ but to link it to my FB, where my kids' friends want to *friend* me because I'm (hee) "cool" and the people I work with, socialize with and am not my girly squeeing geek self with will be able to see my LJ from my FB?
Um, no. I think not. That cannot happen.
I'd have to delete my LJ first and I think that would kill me.

If you look further down this thread, there's a way to disable it, and it seems to have worked. I don't see the option anymore to cross post to FB or Twitter when I reply to a comment. I believe that applies to anyone who posts my journal.

Whew. I was getting nervous!

Completely agree with you. WTF LJ?!?!?!?!

Awesome! There is a way to disable it and it seems to work.

Look further down this thread if you'd like to try it.

Thanks for the link. I added my vote.

If I have this right, even if you F-lock, people can still cross post? Or is it only the comments that are able to be cross posted? See *computer illiterate* here wouldn't know how to do the blocking shit that everyone was suggesting.

It would cross post their comment with a link to the original entry to their FB page, but if someone else were to click on it, they'd get the default "not authorized to see this entry" page.

My big thing is I don't want FB peeps to even KNOW I have an LJ, whether they're authorized or not.

Hmmm, I see. Sort of.

It's only the comments that are cross posted, but if someone leaves feedback or something and cuts and pastes part of what you say, that would be there.

The blocking is actually pretty easy. I'd be happy to try to walk you through it if you'd like. It works which is very good.

Yes, please

Since apparently I. R. Stoopit.

The hardest thing to find is the custom CSS button. If you go to your home page then account settings.

Click on customize journal style.

On my journal, on the far left it says custom CSS. Then you copy and paste that text above and drop it in the Custom external stylesheet. It sounds more complex than it is.

Let me know if you can't find anything, and good luck!

I think I fixed it, thanks.

Though there are still the Facebook & Twitter tickybox choices on this comment box under my user name, and at the very bottom of the 'Post Comment' page of my own LJ. I can ignore live with that.

The ticky boxes will be there, but they shouldn't be click-able. If you can click them, we should revisit it. :) If you can't, we're good!

Let's hope LJ makes a permanent opt out option.

Ok, I'm not on either FB or Twitter, so crossposting entries I make my own LJ shouldn't be a concern, but from what I understand (after two minutes of messing around with boxes), other people commenting on my LJ could potentially crosspost the comments they make on my entries to their FB account?
Big fail, LJ! There's a reason why about 80% of LJ user use a pseudonym that doesn't give their identity away.

Check my LJ. There's a way to disable it. :D
Sep. 2nd, 2010 02:26 pm (UTC)
Awesome. It seems to have worked, too!

Does mean it's disabled for just me or anyone viewing my journal? Forgive my lack of computer abilities.

From caroline crane:

But if you're still worried about it, you can take the option away using this little piece of code in the custom CSS area of your layout:

.b-repost-item {display:none}

I got it from [info]shadowhuntress. Thanks for passing that along; works like a charm. If you are worked up about LJ's (admittedly sad) attempts to become a legit social networking site instead of the hangout of fandom geeks and fringe dwellers, but like myself, you're too lazy to move to another service, it's an easy fix. Just go to Journal Style --> Customize Theme --> Custom CSS and paste that in the custom stylesheet box. If you've already got custom CSS in the box, just paste that line of code at the bottom. Save your changes and you're done. You're welcome.

There's also a GreaseMonkey script that takes away the option from you only (not visible) so no mistakes are made. The link for that is on the entry I made about this last night.

Awesome. I'm feeling a lot better about this now.

It was still a stupid move by LJ, but at least there's a solution.

Glad the code helped! Definitely made me feel better.

Seriously! How dumb are they? I have LJ for one reason and Facebook for another. If I didn't then I would only need one of them, so why would I want them to mix?
Sep. 5th, 2010 11:02 pm (UTC)
You're exactly right. I have no idea why LJ felt the need to do this. Sure, I understand people wanting to be able to cross post, however, there should have been a big, fat opt out option first.

Due to the massive outcry, I'm hoping there is a permanent solution soon.

I've made the recommended changes, thanks so much for the help!

No problem!

I'm glad this post helped. :)
