I'm pretty active in fandom when I have the time to be. Usually drama passes me by with little notice because I've been in this long enough to know that nothing lasts and fandom will still be here tomorrow. vail_kagami is usually the one that's forced to listen to my drunken ramblings on the subject.

I stumbled across this great open comment about fandom in general over on DW. The author is referencing the recent AO3 fallout, but it applies to all fandom, IMHO.

*sigh* I agree in general, but the recent AO3 fallout was somewhat more complex than she makes it sound. A lot of the people doing the critiquing are also the people busting their asses for AO3 (one of the key issues was actually volunteer burnout), so I think dividing the issue into "those who make shiny things" and "those who bitch at them" is really missing the point and just fanning the flames.

To be honest with you, I know nothing about the fallout over at AO3. I hope things are better now. It seems like a great site. I know I've found some great fic over there.

I took her words in generality speaking about fandom. Even then, I don't think we have to be nothing but appreciative. There's definitely a place for constructive criticism. As a writer, I appreciate someone who points out where they think I've erred and why. I just think people sometimes lose sight of the constructive part.

Fandom is such a wild and complex thing. I'm not sure if I'll ever wrap my mind around it.

Oh dear, there were issues with AO3? I do have an account there but haven't posted in ages so I truly don't know what the deal was but I hope it's fixed now. You know, with all the problems we had and keep having with LJ, I don't have time or energy to keep track of other websites... *sighs*

Great post you linked, though, very true. People will never be satisfied with something, there will always be some issue. I just wish we could all be polite with our disagreement, but I realize how naive I sound.

Fandom. That's a whole different subject. I believe we could talk about it for ages and still not be able to understand it properly.

OT: How *awesome* was Sherlock 2x01??? I rewatched it 4 times already and can't wait for tomorrow when I'll be able to watch episode 2 :D *is obsessed and proud*

IKR? There just isn't enough time to keep up with all of it. I've had an invite code thingy for AO3 for ages. I need to start backing my fic up there. There's just not enough hours in the day.

Glad you liked the post! I thought it was well written. I do enjoy a good introspective/opinion piece/open comment on fandom. Like you, it's not the disagreement I have a problem with. People are going to disagree. It's normal. It's human. It's good. Just be constructive about it, and don't hate just because someone has a different opinion than you.

We should have a fandom discussion one night! It would require drinking. *nods*

OMFG! SHERLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't have the words! It came back with more than a bang. So excited to watch the new episode tomorrow!

Give me the code and I'll back them up for ya! XD
Where do you go to get sherlock?

Have I told you today how freaking amazing you are?!

I have *coughs* means to get the Sherlock episodes. If you want the one that aired last week or this week's episode, I can put them in our folder.

Takes one to know one!

Hehe, I got the 2x01. Still need to watch it. This week's would be great! Thanks!

Fallout? What fallout? Hope AO3 will live forever.

I don't know much about what happened on AO3. sahiya discussed it briefly above. Something about volunteer burn out and I believe someone high on the ranks ended up resigning. All of this is just hearsay because I haven't a clue about the specifics.

I have a feeling AO3 will be around for a long time. It's growing in leaps and bounds. :)
