Rec: Twenty-Six and Legend [Star Trek AOS]

Twenty-Six and Legend (Star Trek AOS | Gen | Teen | 18,492)
Author: llethe
Summary: Bones wanted to tell Jim that this was the last time he'd have to claw his way back up from bottom. That he'd more than earned an easy rest of his life. But the evidence showed that Jim Kirk was apparently destined to jump from one tragic catastrophe to the next, because Jim apparently pissed off fate like he pissed off everyone else.
Reasons for Reccing: This is the first story I've been inspired by in quite awhile. I haven't been reading as much lately, and the second I read this, I couldn't get it out of my head and knew I had to rec it. This is some of the best dialogue I've seen in the Star Trek fandom. The writing is subtle and nuanced, yet so unflinchingly honest that it stole my breath away. The friendship and loyalty expressed in this story is gorgeous. There is some great character development post film (STiD) that has become my personal canon. I can't recommend this story enough if you're looking for something to fill the void after watching the latest movie. Also, the author has written other stories in this verse so be sure to check those out as well.

Happy holidays, LJ!

I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! I hope 2014 brings all my friends health and happiness.

I hope to be around more this coming here. I've missed you all.

I'm writing!

Holy cow, after months and months, I'm writing again.

I almost didn't want to post for fear of jinxing it, but what the hell?

It's been ages since I've been on here. I hope everyone is doing well! Oh, unintentional rhyming! I'm easily amused. :)

[Week 22] - Supernatural RPF

The Doors of Time (Supernatural RPF | Jensen/Jared | NC-17 | ~187,000)
Author: felisblanco
Summary: It’s not like he doesn’t try to fit in and make friends, he really does. It just seems like nothing he does is good enough for them. If he smiles they blink. If he speaks they stare. And whenever they see him coming they get this panicked look in their eyes like they want to run away and they don’t even know why. Jensen knows why. It’s the same thing that makes his dad worry and his mom cry. That makes Nana tell his parents he’s going to Hell, not even caring that he can hear her.
It’s what makes him ‘weird’.

Reasons for Reccing: It's impossible to be a fan of J2 fiction and not rec this story. My rec list wouldn't be complete without it. This is one of the first stories I read when I started reading J2 fic because it was recced all over the place, and it's one that has stuck with me. I usually reread it yearly because it's just that good. I think everyone wants magic in their life, and this story makes that a reality. I would recommend this story to people who read original fantasy fiction because it's that good. The author does have a PDF available on the main post that has both parts of this story for easier reading.

[Week 21] - Supernatural

Ghost Dance (Supernatural | Dean/Castiel | Explicit | 51,194)
Author: omphalos
Summary: In post-apocalyptic isolation, Castiel nurses Dean back to something like his former self, but will a time come when Dean's recovered --and rediscovered-- too much?
Reasons for Reccing: This is one of those stories that I couldn't ever imagine writing because I'm simply not that creative. The masterful plot certainly isn't the only thing this story has going for it. Castiel's devotion to Dean absolutely took my breath away. There's so much beautiful intimacy and simple pleasures that I almost felt like I was intruding on something private while I was reading. There's an amazing balance of gut-wrenching angst and healing comfort. They don't cancel each other out; you just get the opportunity to truly feel everything.

[Week 20] - Sherlock (2009 film)

These Things Were Promises (Sherlock | Sherlock Holmes/John Watson | Mature | ~42k)
Author: paperclipbitch
Summary: Watson has had to take a brutal course in being honest with himself so nothing Holmes says will ever be a surprise."
Reasons for Reccing: It's no secret that I'm a sucker for a happy ending. This story has an exceptional ending. It is brilliantly written with an incredibly satisfying conclusion which is hard to pull off in the Sherlock fandom. It's witty and complex, and I promise you'll be aching for the characters before it's all over. It's hard to find the right balance between angst and fluff, and this author seems to do it with ease while being true to the characters. This story is a wild roller coaster, and one that I'll gladly ride again.

[Week 20] - Due South

Parity (Due South | Fraser/Ray K | Explicit | 11,420)
Author: Berty
Summary: Ray has a lesson in partnership for Fraser - what it is and what it's not.
Reasons for Reccing: I absolutely adore Fraser, but good God that man is frustrating sometimes. To be the one watching while he tosses himself out of windows and throws himself in front of every bullet he happens across is enough to put any person into an early grave. This story expresses everything Fraser is, the wonderful and the incredibly dense, and everything Ray wants to be for him. It's hurt/comfort at it's best, with a side helping of Fraser finally buying a clue. Anyone who loves a little Fraser!whump needs to read this.

[Week 19] - Supernatural RPF

Absence From Those We Love (Supernatural RPF | Jared/Jensen | Adult | ~41,000)
Author: _mournthewicked
Summary: Jensen Ackles led a great life. It just wasn’t the one he planned on. Now he’s newly single, stuck at a job he hates, and sharing an apartment with his lovably psychotic best friend. When he’s given the chance to go back and do it all over again, he leaps at it. Only he soon comes to realize that no matter what’s in front of him, it’s impossible to leave the past behind. Considering what he’d be giving up, he might not even want to. (17 Again - J2 Style.)
Reasons for Reccing: Oh, to be young again! This story explores that and more. It features a great supporting cast and a heartfelt plot. I have a great deal of respect for this author because, without giving to much away, there's a scene I don't think I would have had the guts to write, but I'm so glad the author did. It's edgy and smokin' hot. That's all I'm going to say about that. High school fics normally aren't my thing, but this story is much more than that. It's about growing up and living with the possibility of regret. We'll call it a high school fic with an old soul.

[Week 18] - Supernatural

Named (Supernatural | Dean/Castiel | R | 95,000)
Author: mclachland
Summary: Jesus Christ is dead. Somehow, that isn't the worst part of Dean's week.
Reasons for Reccing: First thing: that summary? Freaking epic. This story remains one of the most creative Supernatural stories I've found. The original characters are engaging and I found myself caring about more than just the main characters. One of the most impressive things about this story is the scale. It's truly grand and otherworldly, and even with that, the characters remain so breathtakingly human. This story was written in 2010, and I've probably read it three times by now. It's also available on AO3 so check there if you would like to download it for easier reading.

[Week 18] - Avengers (MCU)

The Worst You Can Do Is Harm (Avengers | Steve Rogers/Tony Stark | Teen | 9,990)
Author: theladyingrey42
Summary: So what if Tony Stark has a folder of pictures JARVIS recognizes alternately as Project Rebirth (when Tony's sober), Project Hero Worship (when he's tipsy), and Project Spank Bank (when he's drunk)? No big deal. Unless Loki destroys Avengers Mansion and Hawkeye ends up finding the damn pictures and showing them to Steve. And if there's maybe a teeny-tiny misunderstanding about why precisely Tony has them. In which Loki is a dick, Thor is the bestest drinking buddy ever, and Tony has a hard time saying what he means.
Reasons for Reccing: I love the idea that Tony keeps a folder filled with pictures of Steve. It seems like something he would do, and the way the author describes the fallout from this is written beautifully. The ending is something of perfection; it's not overdone, using the angst as an excuse for sex later on... not that there's anything wrong with that. ;) If you're in the mood for a good 'Tony feels' story, this is the one for you.
